"hide, we must." This is the type of language used by Master Yoda in Star Wars. It is interesting, and I must say, amusing. Instead of creating a sentence using the Subject-Verb-Object agreement, Master Yoda inverts the sentence. It struck me as something like a revelation. Our society, our world is constantly changing. So is our use of language.
In Singapore, the young are chatting on internet and using sms more and more. The type of language and words that they use are becoming shorter. Symbols are used more often. Not in isolation but in combination with alphabets to create icons and expressions.
This issue of the erosion of language use has been tackled by the Singapore government before. The government was concerned with the ability of the young to communicate in at least grammatically correct sentences. I am too, very much! Perhaps it is my knowledge and interest in linguistics developed over the past two years that cause me to be more sensitive. It irritates me when people do not use the proper grammar structures on purpose, although the messages still get across sometimes. But I really hope that we can all speak in the proper way as much as we can and not be lazy or slipshod about it.
Evolution of English language. This could be a plausible topic to work on when I get the chance to start on my PHD.
Keep it up Jo! Keep learning and working on it! Teach and be taught!!!
